It’s our advice that you stay away from Croft Custom Homes/Dominick Montie and instead find a custom home builder that will partner with you to deliver the custom home that you truly desire and not a haphazard structure built by unlicensed subs outside of the parameters you want.  Our family had the misfortune to place our trust in Dominick Montie, President of Croft Custom Homes and also the sole employee, to build our 5 bedroom house in Albemarle County.  Our first indication that something was wrong was the ‘REJECTED’ building permit that we received in the mail due to permit paperwork that had been done incorrectly with Albemarle County.  When we pressed to have the corrected permit paperwork submitted to start the building process, Dominick’s response to us was ‘Yes, got it and submitted today.  I was in a hurry and didn’t even look at it…’.  At this point we had already lost weeks due to his negligence and lack of attention to detail and ground hadn’t even been broken yet.

We had a ‘Cost Plus Fixed Builder’s Fee’ contract and during the coming months we would ask him specifically to show us the costs of the build which we were liable for.  His response upon multiple requests from us was ‘That’s outside the scope of this contract.’  Later we found out that our foundation cost was almost 50% higher than his stated budget number and we were responsible for that cost which was roughly $15,000.

It was stated in the contract that all work would be done in a ‘workmanlike manner’; what we found out later was some of the crews that had been hired and provided us with quotes for framing the house were unlicensed in the state of Virginia (or anywhere else).  We explicitly asked Dominick if the framing contractor was licensed and he responded multiple times that they were.  The quality of work of this crew also created additional problems as we’ve had to fix issues that would have been code violations and fix issues dealing with incorrect measurements that have change the structure of the house since Dominick has been associated with our build.

The typical time frame as stated by multiple other local builders to frame our house should have be ‘2 weeks, three weeks tops’.  It took Dominick Montie more than 6 weeks and the house is still not currently fully framed.  The severe delay and inability to complete this in a timely manner, far outside the normal industry time frames, has resulted in substantial mold issues with the house that has been verified by an outside laboratory and now additional costly remediation's are needed.  These issues were caused by our building materials laying in the mud, uncovered in the rain, and left to sit in puddles of water and sawdust despite our requests that he stop compromising the building material.

It’s our opinion that Dominick Montie’s business acumen as well as his personal ethics and integrity have severely hurt our family and our desire to build our ‘forever’ home.  We are now compromised financially, personally, and have a half-built house that he is still delaying legally as of the date of this google review.  It’s our opinion that you will be given a low quality house and be taken advantage by Croft Custom Homes and Dominick Montie if you decide to build a house with unless he has a remarkable change in his quality of work, attention to detail, and starts following a moral compass.  His website is https://www.croftcustomhomes.com/   google-site-verification: google76a7fea466d6c700.html

  1. 11 years years before this blog post, Dominick Montie was already fielding questions and mystified about why anyone would consider would characterized his business as a 'scam'.

It's my opinion only but it doesn't appear that much has changed with Dominick Montie of Croft Custom Homes, Inc. in that time. Maybe he should have exerted more effort into improving himself over the year?

It's not the mountain we conquer, but ourselves.
